Sanghoon Kang - Korea

I am a Korean artist based in Canada since 2021. A former university professor in art and architecture in Seoul, Korea, and a former director of an art gallery in Paris, France, I began my career as an artist in 2020 in France and my work has since been showcased around the world.

I have always had a great passion for music and painting, and especially music would be my life path surrounded by a musical family. But I moved into other fields, discovering that I love taking complex thoughts that are closely related to each other, and completed my undergraduate study in mechanical engineering, my graduate study in architecture, both in the U.S.A. and architectural history research in France.

My passion for music and painting has always driven my creativity, with music and architecture serving as key sources of inspiration, and in 2019, I opened an art gallery in Paris, France in order to create a space for art lovers and to collaborate closely with artists from around the world, preparing myself to become a competitive artist.

My artwork reflects over twenty years of experience, blending my insights as an architect and artist with my role as the director of an art gallery in France to shape my best practices.

ARTIST STATEMENT

My art practice is inspired by Goethe’s words, “…architecture is frozen music” and my aim is to demonstrate my belief that architecture must evolve into something that, with its form, satisfies a spiritual thinking and into an artistic as well as cultural container – embracing human life.

As I listen to music, I perceive the movement of musical notes and gain a deeper understanding of its inner structure. Music emerges from the interplay of different sounds from various musical instruments, all connected by fundamental musical principles, which give rise to diverse 'musical images.'

I aim to capture the sounds and movements of music on canvas using geometry, creating a free-form representation as if I were finalizing architectural plans. I believe that architectural concepts can share common ideas with musical composition and hopes that those who appreciate music and art will find inspiration and beauty in my artistic world.
