Joel Moens / Belgium
A quirky neo-pointillism that pays homage to the beauty and strength of women. Born in Belgium in 1959, Joël Moens de Hase is famous worldwide thanks to his photomosaics composed of thousands of photos of small panties. A witness of his time, the artist uses contemporary tools to create contemporary art. Women are central in his work. They are elegant, sensual, mysterious, strong. His art also reflects the power dynamics between women and men, women's emancipation, and women's sexual freedom. He places women at the center of his work and offers a double interpretation of his work, both in terms of content and form. The pleasure of creating beauty, making people dream, making them travel, and why not making them think. Isn't that the purpose of art?
Why “Panties”?
I’m often asked why I include images of “panties” in my work. The answer is simple and meaningful: they show a fascinating mix of power and sensuality. In a society that is still figuring out gender balance, women have a subtle but strong influence, especially through their control of sexuality. Lingerie becomes a powerful symbol, a way for women to shape male desire and imagination with grace and confidence. My art celebrates this power by showing women who are confident and in control of their own strength.
